When I am going down a hill with just the brake pressed my belt starts squealing. You can give the gator a little gas while pressing the brake and it will feels like it downshifts but the minute that you let off the gas petal and only have the brake pushed it will start squealing again. Dose anybody else have this problem or do I need to get my belt or maybe something else adjusted? Don't tell me I am the only one having this problem!

No, you are not alone. The sound occurs when the Gator starts "free-wheeling": After x # of seconds with your foot off the gas, the engine braking is disabled and you start coasting - that's when you hear the squeal. It is an annoying sound, I agree. Some days like fingernails on the chalkboard. Cannot understand why that "feature" was included. If there was a way to disable it, I would do it in a heartbeat. My property is sloped, so when I don't want to hear the free-wheel squeal, I put in low range and just keep a slight pressure on the gas to force the engine braking.

Just keep the rpms up a little bit so it stays engaged. It acts like a jake brake....kind of and helps with the brakes.

Man I was sure hoping that there was a fix for that. We do a lot of trail riding and when you have to go down a long hill it is constant squeaking unless you drive with both feet. It will also squeal when you are going fast (say on a dirt road) and slow down to make a turn. We were riding on dirt roads the other day and had to go down a long hill and guess what, squealing all the way down.

That is the only thing I dislike about the gator. My rhino was great in the engine breaking department. If thats my only complaint I'd say we're doing pretty good.LOL!

I delivered a Gator 4X4 HPX "MERV" that required me to learn to drive with two feet if I wanted to take advantage of the engine braking feature. From what I know about CVT drive lines, that's how you do it. The customized Gator HPX shown below is now serving in Allison, Iowa.

It's hard to give the Gator more rpm's when you live in the mountains and half the time you're going down a 30 degree slope. Had I known it was going to make this horrific noise I would have bought something else. I complained to John Deere several times and was finally told the vehicle "operates to mfg specs". BULL! Two friends have a Teyrx and a Mule. We can't even have a civil conversation while riding, because my Gator is SQUEALING so loud.
