You would be surprised how often it happens. Axel connections are designed for vertical pressure & strength and not so much horizontal strength. Something to keep in mind with those powerful winches. We have seen it while four wheeling in the back country of Colorado & Utah. An axel is unbelievably stuck and someone with a heavy duty winch & some snatch blocks comes along and the next thing ya know, the jeep is no long stuck, but the axel still is.
