As all of us, I too will never forget that tragic day. September 11, 2001 started off as any normal K9 training day. My partner, Apollo and I were at our monthly K9 training at Brunswick Naval Air Station located at Brunswick, Maine. The Naval Air Station allowed all the local Police K9 unites the use of their K9 training center. Just completing our bite work I returned to my cruiser so Apollo could get a drink and prepare for the next event. Parked beside my cruiser was Maine State Trooper Roger Teachout who asked if I was listening to the news. Telling him I was not he advised me that an airplane had just struck one of the towers in NYC. With many years in the aviation field I looked at the clear skies and wondered how in God's name could that have happend. The towers are not in the direct flight path and the ceiling is clear? All units were called back to their agencies for further assingments. Minutes later I listened as the second tower was struck, knowing this was not an accident all units were to report back to their agencies. As Apollo and I were about to depart the Naval Air Station we were approached by a ranking Naval Officer who requested our assistance. Naval Air Station Brunswick was going into lock down, no one allowed on the base other then emergency flight crews. Contacting my own agency Apollo and I along with Deputy Scott Spillane and his bomb dog (now serving with San Diego P.D.) were given permission to remain at the Naval Air Station and provide them with what ever they needed. For the remaing day we worked the front gate, turning back all vehicles and searching every vehicle that was allowed to enter. We were kept updated as the day went along, the updates never got any better. For some reason I really believe Apollo knew exactly what was going on as he seemed much more aggressive when individuals raised their voice at us when told to turn around and leave. I was so very proud of Apollo in knowing he was serving and protecting our country. My heart and prayers go out to families and victims of 9/11.
