I'm in the market for another saw. I have around 80 14"-24" diameter logs to buck and split. I am looking for a saw strictly for bucking. I've got a couple of older saws I've had for years but both are too heavy to use all day. There are a number of stihl and husqvarna dealers near by so I want to stay with either of those brands.
I visited a couple of the arborist forums but the responses they gave to other newcomers were less than civil. I was afraid to ask a question for fear they would decend on my house and carve it into kindling.
I know a lot of you guys, like myself, live on acres.
So, my question: If you were buying a saw strictly for bucking, what saw and bar combination would you buy.

It's for smaller work. Picked up this mint Pro at a garage sale for $88.00.
Easy start if you get on it the first try and good on fuel.
Huskys are really good but suck fuel like a shuttle blasting off and ear protection is a must!

I Have 2 stihl saws that work flawless, light weight and easy starting once you get use to it.

What size saws and bars are you using?

I purchased a Husky 345 with an 18" bar and am very happy with it. Starts on the first few pulls and runs great.

Thanks for the feedback, I ended up with a Stihl MS 261 with an 18" bar. The determining factor on brand was dealer support. There are six Stihl dealers within a 30 mile radius opposed to one husqvarna. I have a 20" Stihl 038 mag as well, so the 18" bar on the 261 seemed like a good fit.
Thanks again for the feedback, it's time to get the gator to work hauling wood.

I have a Husky dealer 4 miles from home and one 5 miles from work. Haven't had to purchase anything except oil yet but a short distance is always better.
Hope it works well for you.
Be careful, machines don't care what is in the way

Thanks Jeff, I plan on going slow until I get comfortable again. Had a neighbor loose part of a thumb a couple years ago, still haven't figured out exactly how it happened.
Regards,
Steve

Don't feel bad. Unless you are into their little clique (arborist) you get nothing but grief. I asked about a stump grinder and got the hire a pro, only pro's know what they are doing, why do homeowners even try? Then I posted this pic and boy you would have thought I had walked around the room and slapped everyone of them. Truth be, I have probably taken down more trees than most of them on there little little clique board anyway.
Oh my current chain saw is a Stihl 290. Seemed to be the best size/weight for me. I do have a couple Poulans I use for one handed operations.

Thanks, I've gotten to the point that I go to that site to be ammused. No thread can go more than a couple of posts before the regulars hijack it and start an argument about who makes the best saw.
I'm glad we all know who makes the best gator.
