This Gator belongs to a high school football program, it came into the school auto program with complaint of grinding when putting into gear (forward or reverse)
Upon inspection the following was observed:
1, when engine is started the primary clutch will draw in about 1/4"
2, with engine at idle the secondary clutch is spinning until placed in gear
3, if the secondary clutch is stopped (manually) it will go in gear easily

Steps taken:
1, tried to adjust idle but it did not make difference
2, removed cover from primary to inspect and clean. no change

It was suggested the springs in the primary are weak (further note: coach says it has always grinded as far as he can recall. there are approx 480 hours on the unit)

Is this typical of the Gator? If not what would be your suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help!

When the gators are in nutral there is no resistance to hold the secondary clutch from spinning in those transmissions, so no matter what you do it will grind if you just push it in gear. I found if I slowly move the shifter into gear it does not seem to grind the gears that bad or at all.
