Here are some photos of proposed winch mounting options

Photo 1 & 2 would use the Warn mounting plate and require some drilling as described by members in various posts

Photos 3,4 & 5 show the KFI universal winch mount.

The winch is not secured in place in these photos, just set in place as it would be if it was actually installed & secured.

The use of the KFI mounting plate-system would make life much easier for this old man, however as you will notice the KFI system restricts access to the winch and line spool. If the winch was just for show I wouldn't be concerned about this. I have a winch on one of my jeeps and use it frequently. Access to the actual winch and line spool is important to be able to make sure that the line is properly rewound as I'm winching otherwise there is the potential of winch line damage from being crimped as the winch is used.

I am open to any and all comments, suggestions, recommendations, criticisms

I do plan on contacting KFI with my concerns

Sorry for the photo quality ..... cell phone photos

I have the KFI mount and superwinch 4500 but cannot install it until spring when I remove the powertach hyd snow plow, the upper mounting points are in that cavity where the winch goes. Also I think you can see enough of the winch line with the KFI to keep it spooled ok. My opinion.

Dan--

Did you contact KFI, what did they say?
Thanks!

My suggestion to KFI....

What I am suggesting is a plate almost identical to the one supplied with the Warn xt40 winch, with the low front where the fairlead would be attached and then a vertical plate at the back where the fairlead bracket would attach to the winch mount plate. This would leave the front & top portion of the winch exposed. The stress of winching would still be on the winch mount plate.

Response from KFI

Dan,

Thank you for your extremely detailed and well thought out proposal. We’re absolutely taking this into consideration in redesigning the mount very soon. KFI intends to create a new revision of the 100860 to accommodate John Deere’s OEM fog lights accessory and at that time will look into a new fairlead mounting design as well.

I am going to have a vertical plate welded to the back of the mounting plate supplied by Warn and then mount it so the which spool is exposed. When I complete this I will post photos of the installed winch. My garages are not heated so I will wait for a nice day to do this.

Thanks Dan.....I'll continue to wait to see what becomes the best option. What do you mean you have to wait for a nice day....its in the 60's out here in Northern California and we haven't seen rain since November!
