Hello I'm new to the forum and just put on a windsheild, hard top, and hard back pannel. Its nice except the noise level seems to have doubled. so I was wondering if some of you have some QUIET mods ? Thanks in advance! Nick
I took all of the plastic off from under, behind and in front of the seats in installed Dynamat. Also put marine engine room insulation under the seats and finally built a custom rear cab wall with 1/2" foam sandwiched between two layers of boat topping material26452646264726482649
Huge, did you take any sound level measurements to know if you got results? Or, did you notice a drop in the sound level. I have not tried the foam and wonder if it actually helped.
I used a sound meter to record the sound level in my 550 before and after installing sound insulation (here (http://www.johndeeregatorforum.com/forum/showthread.php?12429-XUV-550-Sound-Insulation&highlight=sound)is the thread). I took before and after readings over the same course at a fixed speed and flooring it and did the run in both directions. Basically it was a lot of work for very little gain. One thing I've been considering but have not yet done is installing a thick foam absorbing foam to the bottom side of the roof.
I think the Dynamat style sound deadening has little affect on the very open construction of the Gator not to mention that there is little resonance or oil canning going on with it's plastic panels. Hopefully absorbing foam on the roof will help absorb some of what makes it into the cabin.
I noticed the major increase in noise when I installed my roof. I think you are correct in that is the major 'catcher' of engine noise.
I did not do any formal measuring, but, I can attest that it did make a big difference in dampening the noise. Now saying that......ALL of these mods cost me virtually $0. I had the Dynamat left over from a previous project, I had the heavy insulation leftover as well. I own a small marine upholstery shop, so my cost on the rear cab panel was about $25 and buying my employee dinner! If one had to pay for all these items and have them installed, it would add up to a pretty high cost.....my guess in the $500-$600 range. Is it worth it? I dunno....depend on how much the noise bothers you. I did it because.....well I can! Everything I do doesn't always make sense, but it does bring me pride in my work. :)
It sounds (pun?) like I need to break down and buy some foam to line my roof.
