ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – A former employee is accused of using his job to take at least a quarter-million dollars from Moline-based Deere & Company.

Harvey Ulfers, 62, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, worked in Deere’s foundry facility in Waterloo, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Ulfers is accused of documenting a lower-than-actual value for scrap metal leaving the foundry, and then collecting the difference when the metal was sold for its true value at scrap yards, between 2004 and January of 2013. The money was paid to a third-party and eventually to Ulfers, the statement said.

Ulfers is accused of defrauding Deere & Company of at least $250,000. He appeared Tuesday, April 5, 2016, in federal court in Rock Island to face an indictment, charging him with money laundering and wire fraud.

The IRS and FBI investigated after Deere & Company and Alter Metal Recycling did their own internal investigations and turned the case over to police.

After his hearing, Ulfers was allowed to remain free on bond until his trial, which was set for June 6.
